Description
A Kelpie returning to the sea from which it was born...
Recently, I've had a number of people ask me how I create my mixed media artworks. I plan to put together a step by step visual tutorial as soon as my work schedule permits. In the meantime, I'd like to explain a little about the process I use to create this artwork and others like it:
Each element in this work is based on a photographic image then significantly painted to alter it in such a way that it no longer resembles the original.
In this way, the stock images are not simply cut & pasted, the textures and shapes are blended together using many layers and various techniques to create new interesting textures.
When i start an artwork I usually have a strong idea in my mind of the way i want it to look. Sometimes the characters or objects will change along the way, some areas will be erased or the colours may change with each added layer.
Sometimes I re-use small elements of another of my artworks, in this case the shells and starfish have been recycled
I use a wacom tablet & pen to paint the fine details and to paint larger smooth areas of colour which help blend the stock images together.
