By my reckoning it has been many months...maybe even years since I last logged in to dA. I'm not quite back and I haven't really left so if you're dropping back here occasionally to check on my activity you might see the occasional submission and a few little commission tidbits...

For those who are serious about getting in touch, please visit my website:

There are lots of things going on in my studio at the moment. Too many to count! First of all, I'm moving house again!
This time its a bigger space and exceptionally beautiful place where I will have a few months to settle in and create before I have to pack it all up and move again... but who knows what the future will bring? Perhaps I'll be able to really settle in if I get really lucky and find someone to share with.

Taking it one day at a time and ticking off all the projects that I am gradually completing. It has been almost 3 years since I finished a personal work so I made the decision quite recently to concentrate on some personal projects this year. I am still taking commissions, though very selectively. You can check out my Etsy shop to book custom art or contact me via my website.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of the things I've missed this past year so I'll be flitting around looking at all my fav galleries over the next few weeks. Maybe I'll stop for a moment and say hello ;)

sending you all best wishes for 2015

x Lauren

You may be wondering where I've been

Mon Nov 26, 2012, 4:13 AM

It's been far too long since I stopped in to dA for more than a brief dash to check urgent messages...
and it will have to remain so for just a little while longer. As of today, it is one week until moving day!

You can see the latest photos of my new home and read all about what we've been doing with it for the last few months ;)
on my Cottage Renovation Blog.

Coming Soon: 'Building a Studio'. All my plans to have my studio started by now went down the drain when my car exploded in a cloud of smoke. Epic timing.
Not so sure I deserved that Karma. But thanks for the reality check. I'll know better next time than to believe I can save money for things I actually want to spend it on.

Anyway, that brings me neatly to how much I need to get the print orders flowing in... can you help me with this?

My Etsy shop Ginger Kelly Studio is having a Buy One Get One Sale. Until Dec 2nd (which is this Sunday)

Step 1: Buy a print.
Step 2: Choose a second for free (but don't add the free print to your cart, just tell me in a message which print you would like to receive) that way you'll only pay for one. Simple right?

Moving day is Dec 3rd and if you can help me lighten the load then you'll be my BFF

Photomanipulation Tutorials

Sun May 27, 2012, 1:28 AM

Suggestions?

As some of you may know, some time ago I began recording my photomanipulation process using screenshots and planned to make a series of tutorials for basic photomanipulation skills. But before I write up the details I wanted to ask the community of beginners and even intermediates if there is anything in particular that they would like to see covered in my tutorials.

I want to hear from you! Comment on this journal or send me a note

A DD! For Unicorn Princess... one of my first commission pieces from way back in 2010 ;)
Unicorn Princess by GingerKellyStudio

Wow! Thank you so much to everyone who supported me with a :+fav: or a comment...or both

It has truly made me feel much better while I'm recovering from another serious episode of what we think may have been food poisoning. AGAIN. I was taken to hospital, in an ambulance this time :( of course, while going through something like this everyone who has experienced this thinks they are going to die. It really is the worst feeling. Much worse than fracturing my spine, much worse than breaking my shoulder and arm and having surgery to put it all back together. Just to give you some persepctive on the situation. This is the 10th time in the past 5 years that I've been admitted to hospital... and we still dont know what it is that sets me off. I've eliminated so many things from my diet & I'm so paranoid about hygiene & food! Yet still, I am unable to cope with the tiniest change in belly bacteria.

The good news is I am recovering faster this time. Last time it took me over 2 months to be able to eat a proper meal again. I thank the giant cosmic turtle for chicken and vegetable soup! ;)

I miss my Bodhi.

The Indignity of Being a Dog by GingerKellyStudio

While I was away on holiday my beloved furry friend Bodhi died. She was 3 years old. A black German short haired pointer, recently diagnosed epileptic with the happiest personality of any dog I've ever known.
Though her epileptic seizures were a very stressful thing for her (and for us) to be living through, it was not this condition that abruptly ended her life.
Bodhi was rushed to hospital on monday morning after she suddenly became very pale, cold and then collapsed with abdominal pain. Though she was immediately treated for shock and blood results showed very high blood glucose levels, within a few hours she suffered a cardiac arrest and I had to make the decision over the phone to have her euthanised. A post mortem revealed Bodhi had an extremely bad case of mesenteric torsion... fatal in almost 100% of cases. There was nothing anyone could have done to prevent it or to fix the damage that had already been done by her own body.

As some of you may know, I have worked as a vet nurse for the past 8 years. I see terrible things happen to animals all the time and have to do my best to cope with the grief of the owners and to cope with my own grief and shock at some of the things I have seen. It does not get easier.

Every time I drive up the driveway at home I will miss seeing Bodhi running up the path to greet me. The way she would always stand guard and watch over me as I hung out the washing. Chasing pigeons and any bird, lizard or bandicoot that dared to enter her territory. Her leaping in the long grass, springing like a fox when she was hunting mice (she always caught them though I dont know how she was able to grab such a tiny, quick creature!) Her shiny black coat warm against my feet at breakfast when she would sunbake on the verandah and pretend not to be watching for falling crumbs. Her desperate face and ear piercing whine when she really wanted you to put her food in her bowl. Her crazy afternoon moments racing around the perimeter of the garden and leaping the entire width of the verandah in one bound. The way she would follow me around the pool when I was swimming, always reaching out a paw to pat my head when I finished a lap. Her sad puppy face when it would rain for weeks and no one could come outside to play...

Now I'm heart broken.

FAQ

Fri Dec 23, 2011, 4:34 AM

There have been so many notes sent to me lately with requests to use my artwork, share my artwork...etc that I have to record these FAQ here for my own sanity...and as a point of reference for those who need to know.

I'd like to make it clear that I appreciate anyone asking me questions (rather than just going ahead and abusing my work as though ignorance=innocence) but I have these FAQ on my front page, they've been there for ages...but no one seems to read them ;)

so here are the most often asked and answered questions..........

Want to share my artwork with your friends?

I give permission for you to share my artwork on your facebook page but please make sure it links to my website www.gingerkellystudio.com or my own facebook page: www.facebook.com/GingerKellyStudio   and please credit me as either...' Artist: Lauren Kelly Small' or 'Art by Ginger Kelly Studio'

You must not crop, tube or change the artwork in any way and it must never be posted without a clear credit and link back to my website or facebook page. Any violation of these terms will result in much unpleasantness for you.

Thanks very much for your support!

Want to use my artwork?

I am frequently asked by various groups/people if they may tube or manipulate my artwork to create signatures, banners, icons etc.

The answer is no.

I'm sorry. No. I do not allow this kind of use of my artwork.
My artworks are not stock images.
They do not belong to the public domain

Anyone wishing to use stock images they might find something useful in my stock account GoblinStock

Anyone wishing to use my artwork for personal, non-commercial use would need to purchase a non-exclusive licence. This can be arranged easily & if you would like more info please let me know.

Sorry to disappoint you, I hope you understand

:meditate:

Can you paint something for me?

Yes! I'd be happy to.
My commission terms and prices are located on my website under the heading Custom Art
www.gingerkellystudio.com/cust…

Oh, but I need you to do this for free! Why don't you work for free?

I am a professional artist and do not have the luxury of being able to spend my time painting without charging for my time.

Do you have a job?
Do you have to buy food?
Do you have to pay rent?
I do. Creating art is my job. It needs to pay for my food and shelter. So unless you can provide me with a home and three meals a day then I cannot work for you for free.

If you CAN provide me with a home and three meals a day and you happen to live in a castle in Ireland (with a stable full of horses of course) then I will happily paint every wall in your castle and even bake you a cake every day... (and my cakes are delicious!)

A DD today of all days!

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 11, 2011, 7:53 PM

I am in shock.

A DD today for Entangled
Entangled by GingerKellyStudio
:faint:

I cannot thank you all enough for the huge response to this piece. It feels somewhat strangely coincidental that I should be wondering about to fate of that drawing less than 12 hrs before it gets such high praise from the dA community. I am so chuffed. I really am.

Why was I wondering about its fate? Well, its been quite a few months since it was sent off to its owner but I haven't heard from them and they haven't replied to any messages! I hope nothing terrible has happened...

Anyway,

MASSIVE Thanks to MissEmeraldEyes (for suggesting DD) and Mollinda (for featuring it) They are both brilliant if I may say so.

:icondoublehugplz:

My latest finished piece 'Key to Imagination' is now on my website: www.gingerkellystudio.com/proj…

I have news. In the past few weeks I have been working like a crazy lady completing commissions, I've been to hospital once and nearly a second time (though have managed to pull myself back from the brink by keeping fluids down this time), I've been treating my dog for her recently diagnosed epilepsy and not having alot of success because she is still having multiple seizures every month and injuring herself in the process, I have exhibited my work in a group exhibition, arranged a stall at a big craft fair next month, opened another etsy store (with a new label) and designed a website (which I will show you soon), Oh, and I also made over 200 new pieces of jewellery for Jasper and Pearl AND started a new casual job at a different vet practice. And that is just the condensed version of what I've been doing.

Anyone wish to swap horror stories for this month? I'm really sorry if I haven't replied to a message or been able to comment on your new work lately. As you can see, time is a short little gnome with a pointy stick.

My updated commission info is here: gingerkellystudio.deviantart.c… but just so everyone knows, I am pretty booked up at the moment. Yay! If it wasn't for my broken down car I would have had enough savings to actually pay my rent this month! But as it happens, cars are unreliable and a total waste of resources (I hate them, I hate them, I hate them!) but unfortunately, it is  necessary to repair said car if you live half an hour from work and there is no public transport. *sigh*

Ok, thats my venting done for the day. I am trying to maintain a healthy level of emotional calm. I may have to take out all my frustrations in writing these unread journals occasionally.
Sorry dA

You may have seen my latest 'A Wizard's Best Friend' appear in your message box. What I haven't shown you yet is the 'tutorial' that I made to go with it...

And it seems as though poll participation is at an all time low. Have I scared all the people away with my random polling?
Sorry about that! It has been the quickest way I can make an announcement without having to type out a full journal (which it seems only a few people read anyway) but there you have it...

Um. Has anyone found 8 foxes yet? The 9th fox is really getting nervous waiting in his burrow. Its been so quiet out there... too quiet. :plotting:

But if you are one of the few who have read my journal all the way to the end, congratulations! You have earned a very obvious hint for finding the next fox.
I have a Spoonflower account where I upload my fabric designs. The link is on my profile page. And there is a fox hiding among my fabrics.

GIVEAWAY ~ Closed

Journal Entry: Wed Aug 31, 2011, 7:04 AM

UPDATE: gingerkellydesigns.blogspot.co…
These hints are basically just directions... Where are your entries? Only 24hrs left to enter!

What is this?

I challenge you to a game of hide & seek. I have hidden a few things... it is your task to seek them out.

:squee:

If you were watching closely during the past week you would have noticed a few small things changing on my dA pages. LOOK on my profile page...That is your first hint.

:note: you will need to be able to view animations and it would be preferable to be using Google Chrome as your web browser...or Firefox ;)

:note: there are currently 7 foxes on the loose! The 8th is just gathering the courage to leave his burrow....

How does this game work?

This does not count by CearaFinn

This is an example of what you are looking for. It's a badge with a fox on it.

There are 10 in total. They all look like the example above but every one has a different code printed on it. The example is NOT one of the 10 you need to find, but it does have a clue on it to help you find the first badge.

I have hidden these badges throughout my online profiles, websites, shops and a few other places where only the clues and a sharp nose will help you find them...

Some will be quite easy to find. Others may be tricky! Each badge has a clue to the location of at least one of the others.
Finding all 10 will require serious dedication ~ but trust me, it is worth it. Keep reading....

How to Enter

To enter the giveaway you need to find at least 9 different badges. When you have found 9, you will need to write me a note or email (but not both, please!) and in your message write the codes that appeared on the badges you found ~ remember, it is a secret! If you broadcast the codes to the universe it will ruin the game for everybody and spoil your chances of winning too.

Every person who finds 9 badges will get ONE entry into the giveaway draw.

Extra entries may be gained by:

:bulletwhite: Posting a journal or blog entry about my artwork/jewelery or this giveaway...
:bulletwhite: Following either or both of my blogs.
:bulletwhite: Becoming a subscriber to my monthly newsletter
:bulletwhite: Become a fan of Ginger Kelly Studio on Facebook
:bulletwhite: Clicking and commenting on any of the Etsy treasuries I create during the month of September... you'll hear about them if you're keeping an eye on my journals.
:bulletwhite: Responding to any of my dA polls created during September. Poll participation is appreciated. That's why it is on the list
:bulletwhite: For an extra THREE entries, make a donation of funds or points to GoblinStock to help support my photography fund so I can keep making costumes & free stock (you also get the bonus of receiving exclusive stock in return for your donation too!)
:bulletwhite: For an extra TEN ENTRIES you could purchase something from one of my etsy shops :please: ...but no pressure.

:bulletwhite: I may add more things to this space...I just don't know yet what they will be!

:plotting:

But But But...?!?!

"I wont have enough time!" :sprint:

Last year it took less than an hour for my Treasure Hunt mini comp to come to a conclusion.
Don't panic.
This year, I've drawn it out a little to give you all a fighting chance. You have from Sept 1st to Oct 1st to seek out the foxes. Some of these foxes haven't even crawled out of their burrows yet. They will be released at various times throughout the month. So keep a look out!

Rules and such

There will be TWO major prize winners.
The FIRST prize is for the person who is the fastest at finding all the badges.
The MAJOR prize will be awarded to a randomly chosen entrant selected by random number generator (the same way it was chosen last time)
Every entry is allocated a number. If you have more entries, you have more chance of being randomly chosen.

:bulletred: You MUST send me a NOTE or EMAIL jasperandpearl (at) hotmail.com with the SUBJECT:
"FOX GIVEAWAY"
:bulletred: It must list at least 9 of the badge codes. Please type these in the message. NO ATTACHMENTS. Don't attach pics of the badges you found. I just want the codes.

Special Offers

Painting To Pay The Rent* & build my studio
*I'm not opening up a new auction at this stage until 2013.

You can win a custom artwork from me by being the highest bidder on my facebook auction HERE

I will create an artwork that suits the brief you give me & email you the finished artwork in digital format.
:note: If the bidding does not reach a reserve of $180, I reserve the right to print & sell copies of the finished artwork in future if I wish.

Please note that this price does not include revisions, so you will need to give me as much information as possible about how you would like to artwork to look before I begin. Revisions are charged at $20 each.
For an extra $20 USD I can also send you a printed A3 copy of the artwork.

*This offer is only available for projects where there is a high likelihood of my being able to sell print copies in future. If it is a portrait commission where a personal photo reference is used, it is unlikely that I will be able to re-use the same work. If the work is to be re-used for print sales, I will require you or the subject of the photo to sign a model release form if the artwork contains photos of yourself (or subject)

:bulletwhite: Payment Terms: 50% deposit up front. Remainder can be paid in instalments depending on the time frame in which the work is to be completed. Paypal is preferred payment option. Direct Debit is available for Australian residents.

:bulletwhite: Most commissions will take between 8-16 weeks to complete.

Delivery

:bulletwhite: A small scanned preview or watermarked digital copy of the finished work will be emailed to you for approval before final payment is due (optional) I can keep you updated with work-in-progress shots if you prefer. Most people prefer to be surprised as it is difficult to appreciate a work when it is half-complete & still in its raw, 'naked' stages
:bulletwhite: Digital artworks are delivered via email & a printed copy of the finished work can be posted to you (extra charge for postage/handling is $20) All traditional artworks are scanned first then the original work is posted to you ($20 p/h is included in the pricing)

Reference Photos

:bulletwhite: I will require a reference photo/s for all custom portraits to establish a likeness in the artwork. It is best to have a clear, focused digital photo, 300dpi if possible. Having your portrait professionally photographed can be expensive but for digital artwork, a good quality original photo will give the best results. I wish I were personally able to take photos of all my subjects ;) though that is obviously not possible with many of my clients living on the opposite side of the world, it does not mean we can not work together to create a great starting image that I can work from. I will very soon be able to provide a short tutorial about how to create a great stock photo using just a basic camera and a few scraps of fabric... :fingerscrossed:

:bulletwhite: For full body artworks the reference photo is very important. The examples shown are good quality 'stock' photography and are easiest for the artist to work with as the subject is already in costume or posing in such a way that manipulation of the original photograph is simplified. It is not easy to add or remove clothing from a subject... though it can be achieved with a great deal of time, patience & skill!
